These past two weeks have seen some good progress in getting through a very long list of tasks to get Central Park reopened. It is frustrating for those of us looking in from outside of this detailed work, because it seems to be taking so long. Hopefully the information below will help park users appreciate the care and diligence that is needed to responsibly reopen a public space.

Beginning in November, the City of Millbrae, will be making streetscape improvements in your neighborhood. This project will consist of repairing buckled sidewalk, replacing dilapidated newspaper racks, replacing street trees, installing tree grates, replacing benches, installing modern planters, installing interesting bike racks, installation of a parklet, and last but not least, installing the new Millbrae logo on the pavement at the intersection of Hillcrest and Broadway.

On Saturday, October 15th, Dave, now a lead in the City’s Public Works Department, responded to a storm call out on Mateo Ave. Storm water was rising in the street, threatening property damage to nearby homes. Dave knew he had to act fast.

Since our last update, the City has continued to advance the its work in the community center fire recovery. This week the City will make more decisions on interim spaces to accommodate program and staff services. Also, we will begin discussing the schedule to start the rebuilding process with our insurance carrier and adjusters.

It’s been a little over two months since we lost our community center to a fire. Since that day, Millbrae officials and staff have worked diligently to restore the City’s parks and recreation programs and services. The good news is, we’re making good progress and well into that recovery. We have identified several location options for programs and staff services, and are working with our insurance company to start the rebuilding process.

Recently, renovations and updates were completed to Central County Fire's Millbrae Training Center at Station 37. The City of Millbrae can take pride in knowing that Central County Fire has a state-of-the-art training classroom, here in our city, that ensures our firefighters get the best training possible so our residents get the best service possible.

Yesterday, I released a letter expressing the great pride and responsibility I take in serving the City of Millbrae, and summarized some of the success the Millbrae Police Bureau has had these past four months. In that letter, I cited several statistics regarding burglaries in our city and San Mateo County.

It’s been three months since I was assigned to serve as Chief of the Millbrae Police Bureau, a position I have taken with great pride and responsibility. Already, we have grown much together, and I have listened intently to your concerns regarding the rise in burglaries in our neighborhoods and vandalism at our parks. While these problems still exist, I want to let you know of some of the things the Police Bureau is doing to address them.

Dear Millbrae Residents, Structural engineers are surveying the Community Center to assess if it can be saved. If the engineers determine that the building cannot be saved, it will be demolished. If this is the case, City staff anticipates the site will be cleared before winter.

On Monday, Millbrae residents and city officials will join in a special Community Center Recovery Meeting, starting the process to rebuild the Center in the wake of a fire that completely destroyed the building two weeks ago. Starting at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, Millbrae Mayor Anne Oliva will lead attendees in an open discussion on qualities that made the old Community Center great, and seek input on what amenities and services they would like to see in a new facility.

This month, Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) started sending out notices to Millbrae residents notifying them of their automatic enrollment in the program. Through this first phase, 20% of residents in Millbrae will receive details on the benefits and options available to them, and have their PCE power delivered in October of this year.

On Monday, July 25, the City of Millbrae, Central County Fire Department, and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department announced that two minors have been arrested on charges of arson related to the Millbrae Community Center fire last week.

On Monday, July 25, Millbrae Mayor Anne Oliva will be presenting Dot & Dash, two robots that teach elementary school-aged children how to program computers, to the Millbrae Library. Starting at 11:45 a.m. at the Millbrae Library, children will be able to interact, command and play with the robots using a picture-based computer programming language.
