Protecting our water resources is everyone's responsibility. Each day, a variety of toxic pollutants are washed from streets and parking lots into storm drains. The storm drains prevent flooding by sending this run-off to local creeks, but this water is NOT treated, and pollutants ultimately reach the Bay.

Central Park is open for play and recreation. As previously reported, fully restoring access to the main field areas, playground, and tennis courts will require additional steps in the near-future due to safety issues related to the demolition of the structures.

On September 13, 2016, the City Council for the City of Millbrae adopted an ordinance changing the cycle for future municipal elections from odd-numbered years to even-numbered years as required by Sections 14050-14057 of the California Elections Code ("Code"). On December 13, 2016, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved this action of the Millbrae City Council pursuant to Code Section 10402.5.

On October 21st of this year, when Boys & Girls Clubs in San Mateo County received emailed bomb threats, two City of Millbrae employees took action and made calls to parents, reassuring them that their children were safe.

The majority of Central Park is close to re-opening, and the City’s team is making good progress with the insurance carriers to settle on an agreed amount for the restoration of the building and furnishings. In addition, the City Council has approved a project management agreement designed to actively and quickly move the community toward a decision on how to design, finance, and rebuild the Community Center. The goal is to rapidly and thoughtfully arrive at these critical decisions over the next nine months.

On Saturday evening, Mayor Anne Oliva will flip the switch, turning on more than 1,000 lights for the City of Millbrae’s 25th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. Starting at 5 p.m. with carol singing by the Spring Valley Elementary Children's Choir, the ceremony will give community members an opportunity to celebrate the holiday season together as the City’s 30-foot tree is decorated and lit in front of City Hall.

Every three years PG&E does household gas meter inspections for corrosion. Our team has completed the 2016 scheduled inspections and have moved up the early 2017 inspections to this year. Over 100,000 gas meters in San Mateo County will be inspected by the end of the calendar year. PG&E and private contractor (Underground Construction) crews will be conducting the inspections. These inspections used to be part of the monthly meter reading program, but with the SmartGrid roll-out atmospheric corrosion is being inspected as its own program.

These past two weeks have seen some good progress in getting through a very long list of tasks to get Central Park reopened. It is frustrating for those of us looking in from outside of this detailed work, because it seems to be taking so long. Hopefully the information below will help park users appreciate the care and diligence that is needed to responsibly reopen a public space.

Beginning in November, the City of Millbrae, will be making streetscape improvements in your neighborhood. This project will consist of repairing buckled sidewalk, replacing dilapidated newspaper racks, replacing street trees, installing tree grates, replacing benches, installing modern planters, installing interesting bike racks, installation of a parklet, and last but not least, installing the new Millbrae logo on the pavement at the intersection of Hillcrest and Broadway.

On Saturday, October 15th, Dave, now a lead in the City’s Public Works Department, responded to a storm call out on Mateo Ave. Storm water was rising in the street, threatening property damage to nearby homes. Dave knew he had to act fast.

Since our last update, the City has continued to advance the its work in the community center fire recovery. This week the City will make more decisions on interim spaces to accommodate program and staff services. Also, we will begin discussing the schedule to start the rebuilding process with our insurance carrier and adjusters.

It’s been a little over two months since we lost our community center to a fire. Since that day, Millbrae officials and staff have worked diligently to restore the City’s parks and recreation programs and services. The good news is, we’re making good progress and well into that recovery. We have identified several location options for programs and staff services, and are working with our insurance company to start the rebuilding process.
