The Millbrae Police Bureau currently maintains a Reserve Police Officer program to assist the department in several ways. The Millbrae Police Bureau is authorized for a Reserve Officer force of ten officers. Reserve Officer candidates must meet the standards outlined by P.O.S.T. for their level of certification. Upon appointment to the position, the Reserve Officer is assigned to work patrol with a Field Training Officer (FTO). Upon completion of the training program, the Reserve Officer will normally work together with another full time officer, however, "Level 1" Reserve Officers may be certified to work as a solo officer after completing the regular FTO program.
There are three levels of Reserve Officers in the State of California with varying standards for selection and training. The Millbrae Police Bureau employs "Level 1" and "Level 2" Reserve Officers. A "Level 1" Reserve Officer must attend a Basic Police Academy (full time or modular format), and successfully complete the department's FTO program. "Level 1" Reserve Officers may work solo and can be called upon to perform the same duties as a regular full time officer. A "Level 2" Reserve Officer must attend Reserve Modules II and III, and then complete a modified FTO program. Reserve Module classes are normally available through the College of San Mateo. "Level 2" Reserve Officers work under the immediate supervision of a regular officer performing similar duties.
The Reserve Police Officer will assist the police bureau by supplementing the patrol force, particularly during busy times such as weekends and holidays. Reserve Officers are critical to the police department's operations during major incidents such as a public demonstration or natural disaster. Reserve Officers also serve a vital role in various community events such as the annual Art and Wine Festival and other city functions along with their regular duties. The Reserve Officer works sixteen hours per month to maintain their standing as a "Level 1" or "Level 2" reserve officer.
The Reserve Officer program is an excellent way for someone to volunteer their time to make a positive difference in their community. It is also a great opportunity for those individuals considering a career in law enforcement to learn about the job and gain valuable experience. The Millbrae Police Bureau has hired several full time officers from its Reserve Officer program.
The Millbrae Police Bureau accepts Reserve Officer applications on a continuous basis and schedules periodic tests for the position. If you are interested in the program or if you would like further information, please contact our reserve coordinator, Reserve Sergeant Gary Brown at 650-259-2300.
