Millbrae Employee Spotlight: Amalia Pena

Post Date:11/08/2016 11:23 AM

“Building good relationships, being an attentive listener, and taking an interest in solving resident’s problems.” Those are the keys to being a good public servant according to Amalia Pena, a 17-year employee of the City of Millbrae.

Amalia started working for the City in 1999, and has served thousands of people during that time working in a variety of roles. While she now works in Utility Billing in the Finance Department, Amalia has taken great pride in being customer focused over the years, working the front counter, helping customers with building permits, public works encroachment permits, and taking business license and water payments.

“We’ll treat you with the same amount of care if you call in, but it’s always nice to have a face to relate with if people choose to come into City Hall,” said Amalia. “Because we have a lot of face time with our residents and other customers, I’d like to think that we have a closer relationship with them than larger cities. Whether they are coming to pick up free gadgets for water conservation or just coming in to make the water payments, I make it a point to understand our customer’s needs.”

In her current role, Amalia processes utility bills and payment for the City, and sees each day how city services impact residents and business owners.

“I enjoy working with the residents on a daily basis. Helping solve their problems can be challenging, but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job,” said Amalia. “Sometimes, the problem is the water bill is too high. In those cases, after understanding their situation and problem, I may ask questions about their use habits to see if there are things we can help them do at home to reduce their water usage. In that situation, my biggest goal is to help them get their water bill down and keep it down.”

Throughout her 17 years with the City, Amalia Pena has been a true public servant to the people of Millbrae. She is truly devoted to those who live, work and play in Millbrae, and take pride in making our City a great place to live. Thank you Amalia for all you do.
