Letter from Millbrae Mayor Reuben Holober Regarding George Floyd Protests

Post Date:06/02/2020 5:17 PM

Dear Millbrae Residents,

As you are well aware, the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has set off a series of public protests across the nation. These protests have been critically important in ensuring that public leaders, at every level, hear the voices, concerns, and the pleas for help, of black and brown Americans everywhere.

I, along with all my colleagues on the Millbrae City Council, stand in solidarity with all peaceful protesters and the just causes they are fighting for. We commit ourselves to ensuring that everyone who lives, works, and visits Millbrae will be treated with respect and dignity by all of our City’s public servants.

We are listening and we commit ourselves to confronting and addressing unethical, immoral, and racist behavior by anyone who works directly, or indirectly, for the City of Millbrae. We want it to be known, unequivocally, that racism and bigotry, in all its forms, will not be tolerated in Millbrae.

We understand that the great majority of protesters, even if their tactics seem inconvenient or uncomfortable, are peaceful. We support these protesters. Their voices and concerns are real and valid. We also want to make it known that violence, rioting, and looting will not be tolerated, and offenders of these crimes will be arrested and prosecuted.

Recently, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, and its law enforcement partners, have been made aware of multiple online threats against residential areas and businesses throughout region. We want to reassure you that these threats are being taken seriously and are being evaluated and investigated.

The San Mateo County Director of Emergency Services has issued a countywide curfew order from 8:30 p.m. through 5:00 a.m., starting tonight, June 2nd, and ending the morning of June 4th, unless extended. While specific tactics cannot be discussed, the Sheriff’s Office is taking strong steps to mitigate any potential illicit behavior and to protect our community.

I, along with everyone on the City Council, wish you and your family stay safe and healthy during these times. We proudly stand with those fighting for equality and justice throughout the country. We support the good law enforcement officers who work diligently to keep our communities safe while providing equal protection under the law. We grieve with all the victims of hate and violence everywhere and strive to create a more perfect union.

Reuben D. Holober
