Used Needle Reported and Recovered at Spur Trail Near Mills HS
Yesterday, the City of Millbrae was notified by a concerned resident about a used syringe / needle along the Spur Trail near Mills High School. A Sheriff’s deputy and a public work crew were dispatched to the reported location to find and retrieve the used syringe. After 40 minutes of searching, the used syringe was located in a grove of trees on the Mills High School campus. It was retrieved and properly disposed of.
Unfortunately, used syringes / needles are found in the City of Millbrae as a result of the City and County of San Francisco's free needle giveaway program. The City and County of San Francisco gives away 2.44 million needles annually and collects only 200,000. This leaves 2.2 million dirty syringes left somewhere in other Bay Area Cities, including Millbrae. This presents a very serious health and safety issue for citizens and visitors of Millbrae, as well as negatively impacts the City's budget. We are addressing the issue with a possible cease and desist letter to the City and County of San Francisco.
If you find a used syringe / needle, DO NOT pick it up. Report it and a City of Millbrae or San Mateo County staff member will locate it and remove it. Used syringes / needles should be reported to the Millbrae Police Bureau’s non-emergency line at 650-259-2300, or to San Mateo County’s Dispatch at 650-363-4911.
