Millbrae Community Foundation
In 1994, a small group of community members came together to discuss forming a foundation to address the City of Millbrae’s unmet needs. Over the next few years, the residents attended workshops and visited other local and state-wide foundations to gain a better understanding of the task at hand and who would benefit most from their work. The Millbrae Community Foundation (MCF) was officially accredited by the Federal Government in late summer of 1998.
MCF has been an integral part of the Millbrae community for decades. Growing from its original four founders, the Foundation currently boasts 12 members who are dedicated to enhancing the lives of all who live in the Millbrae community. Backed entirely by volunteer work, MCF’s mission is to raise money for and award grants to projects that provide benefits to youth, seniors, and the less fortunate in Millbrae.
Along with grants, MCF recently began awarding two scholarships to graduating seniors at Mills and Capuchino High Schools. The scholarships are awarded to students who are first in their family to attend post-high school education, with excellent community service experience and a cumulative 2.5 GPA. The next scholarships will be awarded in spring 2018.
The organization additionally focuses on assisting the Millbrae community as a whole: after the Community Center was lost to a fire last summer, MCF co-sponsored the 5K Run for Millbrae and pledged to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000. The funds raised by the event were essentially doubled. Moreover, MCF continues to focus on and contribute to the Community Center Fund, which now totals nearly $70,000.
As the Foundation continues to grow, it plans on expanding its fundraising efforts, which will directly benefit the community. MCF will be hosting a talent show next year, as well as a luncheon dedicated to honoring and appreciating the organization’s many donors.
However, rounding out 2017 is MCF’s longest standing fundraising project: the Holiday Star program. Each winter, residents have the opportunity to purchase a Holiday Star to be hung on the City’s holiday tree. Each star – personally handcrafted and 8 inches in size – can celebrate a special occasion, honor your family, or be in memory of a loved one. The proceeds from the sale help fund MCF’s community grants.
Holiday Stars can be ordered until December 24, 2017; all stars will decorate the City's holiday tree. Donors who have purchased their stars early will have the chance to see their personalized star hung during the City's Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, December 2 at 5 p.m. Smaller, 4-inch stars can also be purchased and decorated at the event. Visit the MCF website to learn more about the Holiday Star program.
