Home cooking fires occur more often on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Make sure your holiday weekend is happy and SAFE this year by keeping a few tips in mind from Central County Fire Department (CCFD), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Ready.gov, and the U.S. Fire Administration:
- Make sure you have smoke alarms installed in your home and test each one before company arrives.
- Stand by the pan: if you are cooking at high temperatures, turn off the burner before leaving the kitchen.
- Use turkey fryers outdoors. Never use them on a wooden deck or in a garage.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, one within 10 feet from the stove on the exit side of the kitchen.
