Millbrae Man, Woman & Student of 2017

Post Date:09/15/2017 4:45 PM

Congratulations to Dino De Ranieri, Debbie Van Wart, and Pauline Yang for being chosen as the Millbrae Man, Woman, and Student of the Year, respectively!

Dino, a resident of Millbrae for over 50 years, is a dedicated community volunteer. Using his expertise as a licensed pharmacist, he created and taught drug abuse classes to students in local parochial schools for many years, for which he received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of the Pacific in 1970. He also volunteered as a Consultant Pharmacist for the San Francisco Department of Public Health and was recognized by the California Board of Pharmacy in 2013 for 50 years of honorable service to his lifelong profession. Dino was an active volunteer in his children’s schools, and is currently a key member of the Millbrae Amateur Radio Club, which provides communications support during community events. Dino was a founding volunteer with the LEND group established by the Millbrae Fire Department in 2007 to increase local emergency preparedness capabilities. This endeavor evolved into today’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, which has trained almost 200 local volunteers in first aid, communications, and emergency preparedness under Dino’s leadership. The City's CERT/LEND program received the 2017 Award for Excellence from the Millbrae Chamber of Commerce largely due to Dino's exemplary leadership of the program.

Debbie, a long-time Millbrae resident, has a deep spirit of community volunteerism. She was intimately involved in volunteer activities while her son attended Taylor Middle School and Mills High School. She was an active leader in the Mills Music Arts Group, Mills Drama Guild, and Grad Night Committees, helping to raise funds, plan concerts and plays, and chaperone student trips and performances. Debbie also served as the Advancement Chair for Boy Scout Troop 355, in charge of tracking and verifying the advancement process of each scout member in the troop. She is also engaged as a volunteer at United Airlines where she has worked for nearly 40 years. Debbie coordinated the Daffodil Days campaign at United Airlines for over ten years, raising critical funds for the research and patient support services of the American Cancer Society, and was also a member of the core team who planned the annual Family Day event at United for employees’ family and friends for over 12 years. Since 2011, Debbie has been a Board member of the Millbrae Community Foundation, dedicated to raising funds and issuing grants to local groups that fulfill the unmet needs of the community. Debbie is currently serving as Millbrae Community Foundation President and is the First Lady of the Millbrae Lions Club, supporting her husband Lions Club President Dave Van Wart.

Pauline, a senior at Mills High School, is the recipient of the inaugural Student of the Year award. Pauline is an active participant in the Interact Club of Mills High School (the branch of Rotary International for high school youth), currently serving as Club President and District Treasurer for the 3-county Rotary District. She has been instrumental in keeping her fellow students active and engaged in volunteering throughout the Millbrae community. Her notable efforts include participation in Shot at Life, a program funding vaccines for third world countries to prevent polio, measles, and pneumonia; the Millbrae 5K Fun Run to raise funds for the new Millbrae Community Center; and a Rotary/Interact program that sent over 25,000 textbooks to students in Tanzania. Pauline participated in the Clinical Neuroscience Immersion Experience at Stanford University this summer, during which she and her fellow students created a virtual reality game designed to help increase people’s understanding of and compassion for individuals afflicted with schizophrenia. She is also the Head Performer and Captain of the Mills High School Dragon Team, a performing group that shares the rich cultural heritage of the dragon with the Millbrae community during the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Dino, Debbie, and Pauline will be honored at the 45th Annual Millbrae Man, Woman, and Student of the Year Dinner on Friday, October 20, 2017. Hosted at the Green Hills Country Club (500 Ludeman Lane), the event will begin at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m.
