On the weekend of June 8-9, 2024, Caltrain will be suspending all train service between San Francisco and San Jose to accommodate the testing of the new electric fleet. Caltrain is on schedule to deliver improved electrified service in September 2024 and this final test will ensure the system is ready. Learn more at www.caltrain.com/status.

Limited capacity replacement bus service will stop at San Jose Diridon, Palo Alto and Millbrae Stations. There will be no replacement bus or train service at other stations. Riders should seek alternative transportation if they are traveling outside of these stations. Riders traveling to or from San Francisco should transfer to BART at Millbrae station.

Buses will have limited capacity for luggage and bikes. Riders can use bike parking options, which are available at most stations. Buses will be ADA accessible.

Caltrain’s historic Electrification Project is the first undertaking in North America in a generation in which diesel trains and their infrastructure components are transitioned to an electrified system. Electrification means faster and more frequent service, including doubling the frequency on weekends. The passenger experience will be greatly improved as well with the new trains featuring Wi-Fi, power outlets at every seat, onboard displays with digital trip information, increased storage capacities.

Electrification will also help meet ambitious regional and state climate action goals by lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and relieving traffic congestion. Additionally, electrified service will advance equity along the corridor by reducing noise and air pollution while increasing access for priority equity communities. It will also set the framework for California’s future High Speed Rail network that will run on the Caltrain corridor.

About the Project

Caltrain Electrification is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program that will electrify the CaltrainCorridor from San Francisco’s 4th and King Station to approximately the Tamien Station in San Jose and replace diesel-hauled trains with electric trains. Caltrain Electrification will improve Caltrain system performance, enable more frequent and/or faster train service, and reduce long-term environmental impacts by reducing noise, improving regional air quality, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
