The responsibilities of the Public Works Water Pollution Control Plant division include:

- operating and maintaining the Water Pollution Control Plant, associated equipment, and laboratory to ensure all discharges meet all regulations in an efficient and cost effective manner 365 days per year, 24 hours a day
- managing the Sanitation Fund including development and administering the Fund's five year financial plan
- monitoring and inspecting commercial and industrial users to ensure compliance with all applicable pretreatment, storm water and pollution prevention standards
- promoting public awareness about storm water and pollution prevention programs
- developing and administering contracts for capital improvements
- maintaining laboratory accreditation
- preventing illicit connections and discharges to the City's sanitary and storm sewers
