Smoke Testing Project
The City of Millbrae will be starting a new smoke testing project to locate areas of unwanted stormwater entering the City's sewer system. The project involves blowing non-toxic smoke into the sewer system to identify damage, improper connections, and defects where stormwater may be infiltrating.
The project will begin in September 2017. Estimated project duration is 100 calendar days. Work will begin in the areas highlighted in the map below:
Smoke may be seen coming from roof vents, building foundations, catch basins, clean-outs, downspouts, sewer laterals, or manhole covers. The smoke is non-toxic and is harmless to humans, pets, food, and other materials; it will clear out after a few minutes if it does enter the house.
Some sewer mains and manholes are located on private property and will require cooperation and assistance to provide access to sewer infrastructure.
